From May 28 to Aug. 1, 2026, the Belvedere Hall of the Royal Palace in Naples will host the exhibition Alberto Biasi and Other Visions of Surfaces: Hsiao, Rotta Loria, Tornquist, curated by Giovanni Granzotto. The opening is scheduled for May 26 at 6 p.m. The exhibition project focuses on the figure of Alberto Biasi, considered among the main protagonists ofKinetic and Programmed Art in Italy. The review traces some phases of his visual research, relating it to the investigations conducted by Gilbert Hsiao, Claudio Rotta Loria and Jorrit Tornquist, engaged in different international contexts in the study of perception, surface and color.
Biasi is present with a total core of 35 works. Two environmental installations, Projection of Light and Shadows No. 2 and Light prism, already presented on the occasion of the 2021 solo exhibition at the Ara Pacis, also find space within the itinerary. The works are presented as perceptual devices based on the interaction between light, movement and the observer, in ways typical of his research. Works by Gilbert Hsiao, Claudio Rotta Loria and Jorrit Tornquist are featured with a selection of five works each. The confrontation between the artists develops despite the absence of a common language, through a shared reflection on the modes of surface activation and the conditions of visual perception.
The exhibition itinerary is mainly constructed with wall works, conceived as unstable and variable surfaces. The works change in relation to the viewer’s point of view, generating perceptual effects that are not static and related to the mobility of observation. In this framework, the surface is treated as an active element of relationship between work and viewer. The exhibition highlights Biasi’s central role within the optical-perceptual researches of the second half of the 20th century, highlighting his connections with the contemporary practices of the other artists involved. The result is a confrontation that crosses different generations and geographical contexts, keeping at the center the theme of perception as a critical device.
The initiative is promoted by the Royal Palace of Naples and the Directorate General of Museums of the Ministry of Culture. It is organized by Il Cigno Arte in collaboration with Studio d’Arte GR, with support from Gruppo Euromobil and contributions from Orler TV and Petrone Oleodinamica. In addition, Biasi’s works can be found in important international collections, including the Centre Pompidou, MoMA, the State Hermitage Museum, the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art and Ca’ Pesaro - International Gallery of Modern Art, an element that places his research in an established international museum context.
“I welcome this project with enthusiasm,” said the newly appointed Director of the Royal Palace of Naples, Alessandra Necci. “The choice of this site as the exhibition venue for the exhibition Alberto Biasi and Other Visions of Surfaces: Hsiao-Rotta Loria-Tornquist intends to establish a dialogue between a place symbolic of the history of the city of Naples and the perceptual-kinetic and programmed art experiments of the work of Alberto Biasi and the international artists who confront him within the monumental spaces of the Royal Palace.”
