Extended until Oct. 6, 2019, the Baselitz-Academy exhibition at the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice. This was announced by the director of the Venetian museum venue, Giulio Manieri Elia.

The exhibition, curated by Kosme de Barañano, analyzes theGerman artist ’s work in relation to the Italian art-historical tradition and the legacy of the academy. It also highlights Baselitz’s interest in the Old Masters and his influence on contemporary painting, including his iconic subject reversals that deconstruct the tradition of portraiture.

Divided into sections, the exhibition presents the artist’s paintings, drawings and sculptures and highlights themes such as Pontormo-inspired drawings, upside-down portraits and large-scale nude paintings. Some of the latter have never before been exhibited.

The exhibition is sponsored by Gallerie dell’Accademia and supported by Gagosian; it is part of the collateral events of the Venice Biennale.
