From October 24, 2026, to February 14, 2027, the Mart in Rovereto is dedicating the exhibition *Mondi da abitare* to Gianni Berengo Gardin —the first major exhibition organized since the photographer’s passing on August 6, 2025. Curated by Micol Forti, Gabriele Lorenzoni, and Alessandra Mauro, editorial director of Contrasto, in collaboration with Contrasto, the exhibition features 120 photographs from the family archive, organized into nine sections.
The exhibition traces the artist’s body of work from the 1950s to 2013, offering an interpretation centered on his distinctive compositional skill and the architectural sensibility of his vision. Alongside his interest in the structure of spaces, the ethical and social concerns that characterize his work emerge, as documented through his time spent on construction sites of major architectural projects carried out by his friends, foremost among them Renzo Piano.
The images trace Berengo Gardin’s evolution as a photographer, citizen, and man, linking the precision of his urban observations with a poetic dimension. The exhibition focuses on how the artist constructs his vision through the geometric arrangement of spaces, the volumes of buildings, and the interplay of solids and voids. This formal attention is complemented by a focus on the human element: the people who move through these spaces, inhabit them, and transform them. Work, play, and everyday gestures thus become elements capable of transforming architecture and the urban landscape, bringing to light the social dynamics embedded within these spaces.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog of the same name published by Contrasto, which explores the relationship between photographic composition, architecture, and the spaces of everyday life, offering parallel perspectives on the different worlds observed by the photographer. The volume, measuring 18 × 25 centimeters, has 224 pages and includes 120 black-and-white photographs. It will be available at the exhibition, in bookstores, and online for 39 euros.
