From October 10, 2026, to January 17, 2027 , the Chiostri di San Pietro in Reggio Emilia will host an exhibition featuring Gregory Crewdson. Eveningside. Curated by Jean-Charles Vergne and organized in collaboration with Gallerie d’Italia – Intesa Sanpaolo, the exhibition presents a comprehensive retrospective dedicated to the American photographer, one of the most important figures in contemporary photography. The exhibition brings together for the first time in a single exhibition the photographic trilogy developed by Gregory Crewdson over the course of ten years: *Cathedral of the Pines* (2012–2014), *An Eclipse of Moths * (2018–2019), and the most recent *Eveningside*. This project traces the artist’s creative evolution through large-format images characterized by extraordinary attention to set design and a powerful cinematic impact.
Enriching the exhibition experience will be a screening of the documentary *Making Eveningside*, which takes visitors behind the scenes of Crewdson’s work, revealing the complex creative and production process that precedes the creation of each photograph.
The exhibition offers a close-up view of the evolution of the artist’s visual exploration. While *Cathedral of the Pines* and *An Eclipse of Moths* were set amid forests, clearings, and post-industrial landscapes steeped in a suspended and mysterious atmosphere, *Eveningside* shifts the focus to the ordinary spaces of everyday life. In his most recent series, Crewdson moves away from isolated landscapes to depict familiar places such as shops, markets, arcades, railroad bridges, building entrances, hardware stores, and dairies.
One of the distinctive elements of *Eveningside* is the use, for the first time in the artist’s body of work, of an exclusively monochromatic palette. Through a masterful balance of light and shadow, combined with the use of artificial atmospheric effects such as fog, rain, smoke, and mist, Crewdson constructs images that evoke the aesthetics of classic cinema and film noir. The photographs, printed in large format using pigment-based technology, depict settings charged with narrative tension, where every detail contributes to creating scenes suspended between reality and fiction.
The three series brought together in this exhibition represent key milestones in the American artist’s creative journey; throughout his career, he has developed a visual language that blends photography, painting, and film. His works explore themes related to solitude, memory, identity, and the existential dimension, transforming ordinary situations into images of great emotional intensity. The exhibition project originated from a commission by Gallerie d’Italia – Turin, first presented in October 2022 as part of the Travelling Exhibition program, and after an extensive international tour, it now arrives at the Chiostri di San Pietro in Reggio Emilia.
Born in Brooklyn in 1962, Gregory Crewdson lives and works between New York and Massachusetts. After studying at SUNY Purchase and the Yale School of Art, he is now a professor and director of graduate studies in photography at Yale University. His works have been exhibited in the most prestigious international museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), the Art Institute of Chicago, and the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne.
