In Genoa, the Strada Nuova Museums dedicate a special itinerary to the masterpieces of Bernardo Strozzi

In Genoa, the Strada Nuova Museums are offering a new itinerary dedicated to Bernardo Strozzi from October 31 to January 6, 2020.

In Genoa, the Musei di Strada Nuova, in parallel with the monographic exhibition on Bernardo Strozzi (Genoa, 1581 - Venice, 1644) currently underway at Palazzo Nicolosio Lomellino, offer a focus on the masterpieces of the “Genoese priest” preserved in the collections of the two Genoese civic museums, Palazzo Bianco and Palazzo Rosso (which make up the core of the Musei di Strada Nuova). The Masterpieces of Bernardo Strozzi from the Strada Nuova Museums is a dedicated itinerary that exhibits a representative selection of the Ligurian painter’s masterpieces that are part of the municipal collections: these include such famous works as the Cook, the Madonna and Child with St. John, the Piper, and theIncredulity of St. Thomas.

The itinerary has been conceived by three art historians of reference for the civic collections(Raffaella Besta, Piero Boccardo and Margherita Priarone) and includes twelve works that represent the artist’s manner and thematic choices during the period in which he was active in Genoa (Strozzi, in 1630, due to judicial events against him left his homeland forever to go to Venice, from where he would never move). Most of the paintings by Bernardo Strozzi that are in the municipal collections come from the large picture gallery of the Brignole Sale family, former owners of Palazzo Rosso, donated to the city of Genoa in 1874 along with all the works contained therein.

The new tour itinerary among Strozzi’s masterpieces, which visitors can visit from Oct. 31, 2019 until Jan. 6, 2020, also includes an important selection of the artist’s drawings from the Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe di Palazzo Rosso: these are precious papers, normally kept out of the light in the drawers of the museum’s graphics collection, which are displayed for the occasion to the public, as the presentation states, to “reveal the immediacy of the master’s creative process, from the first fresh sketch on the sheet to the compositional idea of a painting or fresco.” For more information you can visit the Genoa Museums website.
