In La Spezia an exhibition on the nativity between ancient and contemporary art, with works by Maria Lai, Melotti and Pistoletto

The Carispezia Foundation presents an exhibition in its La Spezia exhibition spaces that places eighteenth-century cribs produced in Genoa and Lombardy in dialogue with contemporary works and installations.

From Saturday, Dec. 11, 2021 to Sunday, Jan. 30, 2022, Fondazione Carispezia presents the exhibition Admirabile signum in its exhibition spaces at 36 Via Chiodo in La Spezia. The nativity scene between ancient and contemporary art. The exhibition is the brainchild of Emanuele Martera, who coordinated its image and layout, and is curated by Lara Conte and Alberto Salvadori, who, for the part relating to ancient art, worked on the exhibition itinerary in collaboration with Simonetta Maione and Giulio Sommariva, with the contribution of Andrea Marmori.

The exhibition relates important examples of Genoese and Lombard crib production from the 18th century with a nucleus of contemporary works and installations, creating a dialogue between present and past, between figuration and evocation. Through different media and languages, throughout the 20th century and in the contemporary period, artists have confronted one of the most represented themes in the history of Western art, providing interpretations of it that go beyond the traditional iconography and figurative dimension. Alongside eighteenth-century nativity scenes, the public will find creations by Roberto Almagno, Maria Lai, Marco Lodola, Fausto Melotti, Michelangelo Pistoletto, and Guido Strazza.

The itinerary is developed in thematic rooms that do not follow the strict chronological order.

The exhibition is accompanied by a newspaper-catalogue with a text by curators Lara Conte and Alberto Salvadori and in-depth essays by Giuseppe Appella, Simonetta Maione, Andrea Marmori and Giulio Sommariva.
