From Sept. 30 to Nov. 27, 2022 Crumb Gallery in Florence pays tribute to Letizia Battaglia, the great photographer from Palermo who recently passed away, with the exhibition project Corpo di donna. 2022 Edition. For the occasion, the most beautiful nude photos have been selected, together with the Letizia Battaglia Archive, from those presented in 2020 by the Florentine gallery.
Pink hair, eyes shining like those of a 16-year-old girl, the smile of someone who is really interested in life and those in front of her. This was Letizia Battaglia, engaged in a never-ending tale that began almost casually, as she herself said, in the 1970s and 1980s with the shots that made her famous, those of the murdered dead in the streets of Palermo, puppets with their strings cut, raw images but that like no other can restore the flavor of those bitter years. In addition to these harsh reportages Letizia Battaglia has always documented the lives of ordinary people, on the streets, in miserable houses, in workplaces, in markets, capturing in each situation above all the human movement, the expression of the eyes, especially of women and girls.
In March 2020, about twenty photos, some unpublished and very recent, were exhibited for the first time in Florence at the Crumb Gallery, telling this aspect of Letizia Battaglia’s research: women portrayed nude. “This is the eye,” the celebrated photographer stated. “Not the technique. Not the knowledge. But the ability to really see, standing at the distance ’of a fist or a caress.’”
“In Florence I am exhibiting photos of nudes,” she had said on the occasion of that exhibition. “I tell the story of the grandeur, beauty and sweetness of the female body. Not sexy or in model poses. About 20 photos taken from the 1970s to 2019. There is the girl as well as the woman in her seventies who as I shoot says ’I am beautiful as I am.’ I photographed them with solidarity and respect. A photographer should always be asked for respect, he should ennoble the truth. Photography is a wonderful act, like making love. But with rigor and without vanity.”
Woman’s Body. Edition 2022 is a tribute due to the great photographer, to the woman who with élan immediately believed in the Crumb project, a gallery for women artists, founded and directed by women, generously offering her own shots.
