On the occasion of Lucca Comics & Games 2026, Go Nagai’s illustrations of Dante’s *Inferno*, created in the 1990s, will be displayed alongside six 16th-century drawings from the Uffizi Galleries, including five works by Federico Zuccari and a copy of Michelangelo’s *Anima dannata* attributed to Francesco Salviati.
Go Nagai ’s illustrations of Dante’s*Inferno* will be showcased alongside drawings by two masters of Tuscan Mannerism at Lucca Comics & Games 2026. From October 28 to November 1, at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni of the Fondazione Banca del Monte di Lucca, the exhibition *Go Nagai – Sun, Heart, and Steel* will feature a comparison between contemporary manga and works from the 16th century, thanks to a cultural collaboration between the event and the Uffizi Galleries.
The Florentine museum will bring six drawings to Lucca: five illustrations from the Divine Comedy belonging to the series created by Federico Zuccari between 1586 and 1588, and a copy of Michelangelo Buonarroti’s famous *Anima dannata* (*Damned Soul* ), attributed to Francesco Salviati, one of the leading exponents of Mannerism. Zuccari is also known for the frescoes in the dome of Florence’s Duomo.
In a dedicated space, the 16th-century works will be juxtaposed with Go Nagai’s illustrations of the Divine Comedy from the 1990s, which were also inspired by the version of Dante’s narrative popularized in the 19th century by Gustave Doré’s illustrations. The exhibition will thus foster a thematic and aesthetic dialogue between depictions of Hell separated by approximately five centuries, connecting the language of Japanese comics with the figurative tradition of the Renaissance.
Go Nagai, creator of iconic characters such as Mazinger Z, Jeeg, and Devilman, will be the focus of the exhibition in Lucca, which will feature his works alongside a selection of historical pieces from the Uffizi’s collections.
