Mucciaccia Gallery Project presents Piero Pizzi Cannella ’s solo exhibition entitled Shunga. The Paintings of Spring. On display are thirteen works (ten works on paper and three ceramics) created between 2009 and 2011.
It is a tribute to Japanese “shunga” prints, which between the 17th and 19th centuries celebrated eros and the freedom to love at a time when the Land of the Rising Sun was going through a particularly prosperous phase. Shunga or spring images are thought to have originated in China as Chūngōnghuà,“paintings of the Spring Palace,” drawing inspiration from ancient illustrations in medical manuals, mixing knowledge of the body with the art of seduction. Later, during the Edo period (1603-1868), a period of great economic and cultural development for Japanese civilization, shunga spread throughout Japan. In the words of art historian Valentina Casacchia: “From the luxury of ancient Chinese scrolls, hand-painted for aristocrats and literati, these images traveled to Japan. And there they became closer to the people. They entered the rooms of everyone from soldiers to professors, in the lockers of courtesans as little guides to train fantasies, poses and gentle rhythms.” Behind these delicate yet explicit figures ended up hiding an entire philosophy of the senses.
Piero Pizzi Cannella reproduces these images faithfully and with a unique delicacy and finesse, fully reflecting the Maestro’s great art.
A catalog published by Silvana Editoriale will be published on the occasion of the exhibition.
