The career and works of Oscar winner Vittorio Storaro on display at Palazzo Merulana

Through Nov. 1, Rome's Palazzo Merulana is hosting an exhibition dedicated to the career of Vittorio Storaro, the three-time Oscar-winning cinematographer.

On view at Palazzo Merulana until Nov. 1 is the exhibition Vittorio Storaro: Writing with Light, a photo-cinematographic exhibition conceived and wanted to recount, through photography, the intense figurative research work carried out by Vittorio Storaro (Rome, 1940), the great director of photography already 3 times Oscar winner, in his 50-year career.

On display are 70 works, some in dialogue with works from the Cerasi Collection: 70 “light stands,” including 50 original cine-photographs and 20 canvas copies of the paintings that inspired Storaro’s figurative-cinematographic research.

The photographs are part of his reflection on the language of the photographic and cinematic image, developed throughout his career in some 40 films:

“When I came to a moment of growth,” says Vittorio Storaro, “I saw how it was possible to express myself in photography with a cinematographic sense, that is, by uniting more than one image,” he explains, “since photography is expression in a single image, like painting; cinematography, on the other hand, is expression in multiple images. This, then, is not just a photography exhibition but actually an exhibition of various art forms: writing, because everything starts from a story; pure photography; and cinematography.”

In this context, the exhibition is of twofold interest, technical and narrative, thanks to the transition from the moving image, which characterizes cinematography, to the still image, characteristic of photography. Storaro’s photographic work, while totally part of his cinematic endeavor, is conceived and composed as a narrative of images in its own right. Double-impression images that suggest, through dreamlike atmospheres, a very personal interpretation of the stories represented filmically.

Palazzo Merulana thus intends to pay homage, on the occasion of his 80th birthday, to the most beloved and appreciated author of cinematography. Already a three-time Academy Award winner for Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, Warren Beatty ’s Reds and Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor, winner of the Nastro d’ Oro in the 74th edition of the Nastri d’Argento last July and numerous other awards, with this exhibition Vittorio Storaro presents himself in an unusual guise, that is, “essentially” as a photographer, as a narrator for still images... Storaro: Writing with Light is, in fact, a photo-cinematographic exhibition conceived and wanted with the intention of telling, through photography, a story in motion.
