The young Picasso of the blue and pink period will be on display in Basel

Basel is hosting the exhibition 'The Young Picasso - Blue and Pink Period' from February 3 to May 26, 2019. At the Fondation Beyeler.

The Fondation Beyeler in Basel is planning, starting February 3, 2019 and running until May 26, a major exhibition dedicated to the young Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 - Mougins, 1973), by which we mean the one from the blue and pink period, so much so that the exhibition will be titled The Young Picasso - Blue and Pink Period. The Foundation announced that among the works featured in the exhibition will be La Vie of 1903, coming from the Cleveland Art Museum. “Picasso’s La Vie,” commented Raphael Bouvier, curator of the exhibition, “is a key work of 20th-century art and one of the most compelling paintings in modern art. It is probably Picasso’s first major masterpiece. It is an immense joy for us to be able to include this rarely loaned and so important canvas in our exhibition.”

Picasso painted the work in Barcelona, at the age of only twenty-two. La Vie is an ambiguous and mysterious painting, in some respects yet to be studied, and marks the culmination of Picasso’s blue period, which lasted from 1901 to 1904 and was characterized by deeply moving works centered on universal questions of human life, and for which the artist used shades of blue.

More information about the exhibition will be available on the Fondation Beyeler website.
