Three sixteenth-century nativities to be rediscovered for the exhibition Masterpiece for Lecco

From December 5, 2021 to March 5, 2022, Lecco's Palazzo delle Paure will host the exhibition Saved Stories. Three Sixteenth-Century Nativities to Rediscover, on the occasion of the third edition of Capolavoro per Lecco.

The initiative, now in its third edition, Capolavoro per Lecco (Masterpiece for Lecco), promoted by the Pastoral Community and the Cultural Association Madonna del Rosario, in collaboration with the Municipality of Lecco, is back again this year: from December 5, 2021 to March 5, 2022, the second floor of the Palazzo delle Paure will host Storie salvate. Three Sixteenth-Century Nativities to Rediscover, curated by Giovanni Valagussa, former curator of previous editions, and Antonio Mazzotta. “The task of us curators is not only to identify works, but it is also to find and bring to the public works that deserve to be discovered. These are of very high quality and there is still much to be studied,” the two curators stressed.

“It would have been easy to borrow a large painting from a museum or gallery in Milan, but it is in the small stories that we recognize our style,” commented Don Davide Milani. "For the first time we are presenting three Nativities.

The Nativity in its most usual but also most narrative form of representation, that of the Nativity scene. The three protagonist paintings belong to theLombard-Venetian area of the 16th century, almost never seen or considered by studies, often because of the places where they are kept. They are Andrea Previtali ’s Nativity (c. 1520) kept at the Sanctuary of Santa Maria Nascente di Arconate (Parish of Sant’Eusebio di Arconate), theAdoration of the Shepherds by a Venetian painter (possibly Jacopo Bassano, c. 1530-1535) and theAdoration of the Shepherds by Giovanni Battista Moroni (c. 1550-1555), the latter both from private collections.

New features of this edition include the broadcast of musical pieces from the 16th century and the reading of fragments of sacred representations to give voice to the more colloquial and popular dimension of the encounter with the Nativity.

To visit the exhibition, reservations must be made at www.capolavoroperlecco.it. Admission will be granted to groups of ten people, every 15 minutes.

Ticket: 2 euros.
