From November 22, 2025 to January 6, 2026, MUDEC Photo - Museum of Cultures in Milan welcomes Trentino Unexpected, an exhibition project curated by Denis Curti that offers a reinterpretation of Trentino through the language of contemporary photography. The initiative involves five internationally renowned authors: Simone Bramante, Gabriele Micalizzi, Roselena Ramistella, Massimo Sestini and Newsha Tavakolian, invited to narrate the Trentino territory with a polyphonic and articulate gaze. The Milan stop follows the success of the first exhibition at the Mart in Rovereto, held from July 12 to Nov. 9, 2025. Produced by Trentino Marketing in collaboration with 24 Ore Cultura, the exhibition was created as an evolution of the book of the same name published by Gribaudo, translating the images and narratives contained in the book into an exhibition itinerary characterized by a strong visual and conceptual impact.
"Trentino Unexpected is a journey into the contemporary, an exercise in visual freedom and cultural responsibility,“ says Denis Curti, curator of the exhibition. ”Each author has found in Trentino his own measure, his own vertigo, his own idea of authenticity."
The exhibition includes more than 80 large- and extra-large-format photographs that outline a mosaic of identities, landscapes and communities. From forests to castles, from glaciers to vineyards, from the faces of local communities to the traces of production activities, the works compose a portrait of Trentino that renders the complexity of the territory and the richness of its history and tradition. The exhibition is structured in five thematic sections: Borders, dedicated to frontier territories and places of passage; Verticality, which highlights the majesty of the mountains and the values of hard work, commitment and solemnity; Authenticity, focusing on daily life and the choices of those who seek meaning away from superficiality; Care, which tells how individual gestures can have positive effects on the community; and Imprint, focused on the material and intangible heritage passed down from generation to generation.
Trentino Unexpected is distinguished by an approach away from clichés and tourist postcards. The exhibition privileges an authentic representation of places, giving voice to people and dwelling on social changes, identity roots and founding values of the Trentino community. The exhibition includes textual and graphic apparatuses and concludes with images and videos documenting the backstage of the photographic sessions, offering the public an insight into the research phase conducted in the area. The Milan stage offers a reinterpretation from the original Mart installation, where the link with the territory appears more direct. At MUDEC, the dialogue between photography and the urban and multicultural context amplifies the narrative dimension of the exhibition.
