A call to rethink nature: sustainable ideas for events and cultural spaces in Siena

As part of the Florere project, a call for ideas targets young creatives to imagine new ways of relating to nature and designing sustainable cultural installations. Sponsored by Siena Art Institute and other partners, the deadline is June 2, 2025.

Reconfiguring the view of nature, questioning new forms of relationship with green spaces, imagining cultural installations capable of combining functionality and sustainability: these questions are the starting point of the call for ideas launched in Siena as part of the Florere project . Sowing sustainable practices. An initiative aimed at young creatives and thinkers of various backgrounds, called to propose innovative visions capable of redefining our relationship with the natural environment, cultural venues and event design in the context of the province of Siena. The call is promoted by a broad and multidisciplinary partnership, led by the Siena Art Institute and composed of Fondazione Musei Senesi, TVSpenta APS, Pro+ APS, Mason Perkins Deafness Fund, Compagnia Il Grappolo, Unione Astrofili Senesi and Gruppo Trekking Senese. The initiative is part of the broader framework of the Florere project, supported by the Monte dei Paschi di Siena Foundation through the RESET 2023 public notice, and aims to create a concrete opportunity for experimentation and confrontation for young students, recent graduates and recent graduates, from any disciplinary field and resident in Italy.

The objective of the call is to stimulate the development of ideas and projects capable of transforming natural and public space into a place of relationship and participation, while promoting sustainable and replicable cultural practices. The call is aimed at creatives, artists, performers, designers, architects, writers, communication and marketing professionals, as well as scholars and researchers in fields such as philosophy, biology, fashion, graphic design and video. No previous experience is required: it will be the quality of the project, its originality and the ability to fit coherently and carefully into the local context that will make the difference.

There are three thematic challenges on which the call is structured. New Look invites creative and sensitive experiences that allow people to observe and experience nature in a different way, stimulating awareness and participation. Relational Space focuses on the possibility of transforming public and natural places into spaces for cultural relations and sharing. Pop-up Festival, on the other hand, focuses on the design of temporary, functional but sustainable installations intended to host outdoor events, with a focus on environmental friendliness and inclusiveness. Proposals may take different forms: art installations, design projects, performance actions, cultural activities, creative writing, temporary set-ups and other hybrid languages. Particular value will be placed on ideas that adopt a site-specific approach, involve the involvement of local communities, and are designed in such a way that they can be replicated in other contexts, including those outside provincial borders. Participation is open to individuals as well as groups or collectives, as long as at least one of the members meets the biographical and educational requirements stated in the call for proposals. The six proposals selected as finalists will be published in the special issue of the digital magazine SEME-strale, which will collect the results and reflections born from the entire project process. At a widespread public event scheduled for July 2025, the finalist ideas will be presented on the provincial territory through moments of discussion and restitution.

Three of the finalist projects will also be awarded a cash prize of 500 euros each. The winners will participate in a training experience on the territory, during which they will be able to refine their proposals with the support of the partner network and professionals involved in the Florere project. To apply, you must complete the online form available at the link https://shorturl.at/vGZR0 by 11:59 p.m. June 2, 2025.
