In the upcoming auction of 19th Century Paintings, scheduled for Nov. 19, 2025 at Pandolfini, a painting by Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo will go up for auction: this is the first time this work has gone on the market. It is Meadows and Hills of the Curone Valley (also known as Meadows and Hills along the Curone), exhibited in 1920 at the historic exhibition dedicated to the artist at the Pesaro Gallery in Milan.
The painting is one of the earliest examples of pure landscape made by Pellizza, a work that testifies to his deep attention to nature and light, central elements of his pictorial research. After its last appearance in the 1954 posthumous exhibition in Alessandria, Italy, the painting remained jealously guarded in a private collection for a long time, until it was exhibited again thanks to the studies and efforts of scholar Aurora Scotti, who has enhanced its importance in the artist’s corpus.
The painting will be on display in an exhibition in Milan, at the Via Manzoni venue, from November 6 to 8, 2025.
Other works in the catalog include a pastel by Giovanni Boldini depicting a young boy, an important painting by Pietro Pajetta, Jubilee, from 1886, a view of Burano by Pieretto Bianco, a Portrait of a Sailor by Baccio Maria Bacci, and a painting by Giulio Aristide Sartorio, Mediterraneo, executed during one of the artist’s missions to the Mediterranean Sea in 1929.
