On August 20, 1418, the Arte della Lana of Florence announced a competition to build the dome of the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore: it was won by the great Filippo Brunelleschi (Florence, 1377 - 1446), author of the extraordinary dome we all know. The first model was presented by Brunelleschi in December 1418, and the laying of the foundation stone took place in 1420. Thus, this year marks exactly 600 years since the competition that marked the beginning of one of the greatest adventures in art history and the construction of one of the most famous architectural works in the entire world.
To celebrate this anniversary, theOpera del Duomo of Florence is launching a new contest: this time it is a digital contest called Sketch the Dome (“Draw the Dome”) in which everyone, from February 1 to May 31, can participate. All you need to do is have an Instagram account, download the Autography App and make a digital creation that has Brunelleschi’s dome as its theme. You can draw, write or express yourself in whatever creative medium you deem necessary: once created, the “graffiti” must be posted on the contestant’s Instagram profile with the hashtags #SketchTheDome and #MuseoDuomoFi.
Starting June 1, the staff of the Florence Cathedral Museum will select the finalist graffiti that will be featured in September in a temporary exhibition housed in the premises of the Opera del Duomo, in the shadow of the dome. It is, as explained in the presentation in the project, “an opportunity to pay homage to one of the greatest creations of human ingenuity-an icon of art, architecture, history and faith-and at the same time free your imagination to become part, even if only temporarily, of the century-long history that is the shared legacy of Piazza del Duomo.” More information can be found on the website of theOpera del Duomo of Florence.
