Renovated Vatican Ethnological Museum opens with an exhibition dedicated to the Amazon

In the renovated spaces of the Vatican Ethnological Museum Anima Mundi, the exhibition Mater Amazonia. The deep breath of the world, dedicated to the green heart of the Earth.

The exhibition intends to offer the public a cognitive itinerary of the Amazonia: a multimedia and immersive journey to better understand this place through three environments of local daily life, namely the forest, the river and the maloca, that is, the community house. There are more than one hundred objects that alternate with films and photographs that tell the close relationship between man and the environment. In addition, in one section of the exhibition, images of the flow of the river and the spectacle of nature are projected in 4K on two large screens, totaling nearly 64 meters in area.

A number of objects testify to the indigenous peoples’ encounter with the Christian faith and how they have linked so many aspects of their daily lives to the Gospel; projections of historical images and original footage recount the work of missionaries in the region.

The exhibition is intended to offer the public an opportunity to reflect on some major themes, such as concern for nature, justice to the poor, and engagement in society, through projections, lights and sounds that take the viewer from the majestic tranquility of Amazonian landscapes to the stark reality of the problems and tragedies that convulse that land and the entire planet.

The exhibit is a collaboration between the Vatican Museums and the Missionaries of the Consolata, and the technical realization of the project is by Mediacor of Turin.
