Egypt: probable mortuary of princess discovered in Dahshur

Archaeological discovery in Egypt's Dahshur necropolis: archaeologists find probable burial of Pharaoh Emnikamaw's daughter.

New archaeological discovery at the site of Dahshur, Egypt, where the remains of a pyramid dating back some 3,800 years had already been discovered in April. This was announced by Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities through a Facebook post. The discovery, in particular, would involve the pyramid’s mortuary chamber. The director of the excavations, Adel Okasha, said that his team, after removing the stones that closed the tomb, found some wooden boxes with hieroglyphics engraved on them: this is a text containing a ritual that had the function of protecting the deceased. The hieroglyphs also indicate the name of the daughter of Pharaoh Emnikamaw (or Ameny Qemau), of the 13th Dynasty (reigned between 1793 and 1791 B.C.), whose pyramid is located about 600 meters from the site of the find. It is therefore likely that the pyramid was the burial place of the princess.

The chest, excavation officials point out, contained the canopic jars with the deceased’s organs and the bands used to wrap them. Remains of a sarcophagus, in a precarious state of preservation, were also found. The Ministry announced that excavations will continue to allow new discoveries to shed more light on the “secrets of the pyramid.” The Dahshur necropolis in recent hours was visited by Egyptian authorities.
