Leonardo da Vinci ’sVitruvian Man will be exceptionally displayed in Fano for a few days later this summer, thanks to a collaboration with the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice. The announcement was made today by Minister Alessandro Giuli during his visit to the archaeological site in Piazza Andrea Costa, Fano.
Indeed, in January this year, remains identified as the remains of the Basilica of Vitruvius emerged during redevelopment work in Piazza Andrea Costa. The discovery is considered to be of great scientific importance and was made possible thanks to funding from the PNRR - Next Generation EU.
Excavation activities, which began on April 15, are returning additional elements useful in defining the structure of the ancient architectural complex. Archaeologists have unearthed part of the foundations of the perimeter wall, some sections of the masonry and fragments of stone slabs that may belong to the pavement.
“The discovery of the Basilica described by Vitruvius represents a discovery of exceptional scientific value. The ancient Fanum was an architectural model of Western civilization and the Marche region is confirmed as a precious treasure chest of our history. The continuation of the excavations is making it possible to acquire new elements and further details, gradually increasing our knowledge of the site,” the minister said.
During the visit, Culture Minister Giuli also highlighted the MiC’s attention to the Marche region, recalling the investments activated through the PNRR, which exceed 124 million euros. Added to these are nearly 15 million euros allocated between 2022 and 2025 for interventions aimed at enhancing the regional museum heritage.
