The Ministry of Culture is seeking a new Director General of Museums: in a circular dated August 3, the MiC announced the launch of the selection process aimed at filling the senior management position of Director of the General Directorate of Museums, a unit within the Ministry’s Department for the Promotion of Cultural Heritage. The appointment will be for a term of three years.
The ministerial document outlines the requirements candidates must meet to apply for the position, distinguishing between general requirements and specific requirements related to the skills needed to lead the national museum system. Among the general requirements is, first and foremost, experience in team leadership and the implementation of large-scale projects, with particular emphasis on the management of complex projects. A proven ability to communicate is also required, combined with an aptitude for multidisciplinary work and a practical approach to problem-solving. The Ministry also requires that the candidate demonstrate professional aptitudes and skills appropriate for the role, as evidenced by achievements over the past three years, where such information is available. Rounding out the general requirements is the need for strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact effectively with institutional stakeholders—an element considered essential for a role that involves constant engagement with other government agencies and organizations.
In addition to the general requirements, the circular identifies four areas of specific requirements that candidates must meet, which are closely linked to the functions of the General Directorate of Museums. The first concerns several years of experience in coordinating and managing digital tools and platforms designed to promote and facilitate access to the cultural heritage of the National Museum System, including the development and implementation of strategies for promoting and ensuring accessibility to this heritage through integration with new technologies and digital tools. The second area requires specific experience in the promotion and communication of cultural heritage, to be carried out through integrated and coordinated strategies within the framework of the National Museum System, in line with the highest international standards and in close connection with the activities of promoting and managing the heritage itself.
The third specific requirement concerns experience gained in international contexts, with particular reference to cultural and scientific cooperation, the planning and implementation of exhibition initiatives, as well as the promotion of cultural agreements and the enhancement of cultural heritage abroad. The fourth and final specific requirement pertains to experience in the planning, management, and monitoring of complex programs and projects aimed at the enhancement, public access, and promotion of cultural heritage, including through the coordination of both national and European financial resources, as well as initiatives aimed at enhancing and expanding museum collections.
To enable the administration to verify that these requirements are met, the circular stipulates that each candidate must submit a detailed and precise report clearly indicating the start and end dates of each cited experience in project direction or management. The report must also accurately describe the activities carried out, the roles held, and the objectives actually achieved. Attached to this report, as appropriate for the type of position held, must be the performance evaluation form covering the three-year period 2023–2025. The Ministry further specifies that, in the same report, the candidate must ensure to provide all relevant information necessary to allow for an assessment of the additional requirements specified in the procedure.
The circular also extends eligibility to individuals with specific and proven professional qualifications, provided they have worked in public or private organizations or entities, or at public or private companies, and have at least five years of experience in managerial roles. Alternatively, those who have attained a specific professional, cultural, and scientific specialization— as evidenced by university and postgraduate education, scientific publications, and concrete work experience gained over at least five years—including at state administrative bodies, such as those that appoint these positions—provided that such experience was gained in functional roles eligible for promotion to management. Finally, the pool of potential candidates also includes those from the fields of research, university teaching, and the judiciary, as well as attorneys and state prosecutors.
Applications must be submitted exclusively to the certified email address dg-ruo.incarichidirigenziali@pec.cultura.gov.it by 12:00 p.m. on August 13, 2026. This is a strict deadline; failure to comply will result in exclusion from the process.
