Paestum conquers China: exhibition dedicated to Paestum, ancient Mediterranean city, opened

Inaugurated in China the first stage of the exhibition "Paestum: a city of the ancient Mediterranean." Through July 2020.

Inaugurated, at theHebei Museum, the first monographic exhibition dedicated to Paestum outside Europe: the exhibition, titled Paestum: a city of the ancient Mediterranean, conquers China and will be on view until July 2020; it will also be hosted in museums in Ningxia, Jilin, Panlongcheng and Nanshan.

Chinese museum director Luo Xiangjun said, “The exhibition has started with great success. We are grateful to the Paestum Archaeological Park for the collaboration that allows the Chinese public to learn more about ancient Mediterranean culture. We hope the collaboration will continue as part of a mutual cultural exchange between the two peoples, the Italian and the Chinese.”

The traveling exhibition showcases 135 Pestan works, including the marble statue of Hera from the sanctuary dedicated to the goddess at the mouth of the Sele River and its terracotta reproductions, a number of painted slabs representing unique archaeological evidence throughout the ancient Mediterranean context, some grave goods from urban necropolises up to the best-known vascular productions, including the Pestan potter Assteas.

Gabriel Zuchtriegel, director of the Paestum Archaeological Park, stressed, “The sensitivity that the Hebei Provincial Museum has shown in hosting this exhibition on Paestum as a Mediterranean city is remarkable. I must say that in this our Chinese colleagues have been more sensitive than many European museums that continue to portray Magna Graecia as a peripheral and marginal world, where it represents one of the roots of Western culture and thought.”

The work of setting up the exhibition was supervised by the staff of the Archaeological Park: restorers Franco Calceglia and Raffaele Cantiello and archaeologist Francesco Scelza worked side by side with professionals from the Hebei Museum to create an exhibition that enhances the appeal of Paestum’s culture, including the reproduction of the Tomb of the Diver.

And Paestum is also landing in China on social channels. In order to promote the exhibition and raise awareness of the beauty of the Magna Graecia city with the three best-preserved Doric temples in the world, a Weibo profile of the Park, the most popular social media outlet in China, has been created.
