Shirin Neshat wins prestigious award at Photo London 2020

As part of Photo London 2020, the Master of Photography Award is presented to Iranian artist Shirin Neshat.

As part of Photo London 2020, the Master of Photography Award, an award given annually to a contemporary photographer who produces a special exhibition within the fair, will go to Iranian artist Shirin Neshat (Qazvin, 1957).

In this edition of Photo London, the artist is presenting for the first time in the UK her series of photographs The Home of My Eyes (2015), recently shown in Los Angeles as part of a major retrospective dedicated to her. It consists of 55 intimate, close-up portraits that represent a shift in Shirin Neshat’s output as the images reflect on cultures other than Iran.

By portraying people from Azerbaijan, the artist conceives the series as “a portrait of a country that has long been a crossroads of many different ethnicities, religions and languages.” In addition, the artist inscribed the portraits using text to report the depicted subjects’ personal views oncultural identity and their idea of home.

The exhibition also includes the 2015 film Roja, in which Neshat reflects on her own experience of living within the foreign culture of the United States, highlighting the nostalgia an Iranian woman feels for her homeland.

She will also present a site-specific photo-installation.
