Trento, a supermarket in the stalls of a historic theater: Anna Scalfi Eghenter's provocative installation

The stalls of Trento's Teatro Sociale transformed into a supermarket: it is Anna Scalfi Eghenter's provocative installation.

A theater provocatively transformed into a supermarket: it happens at Trento’s Teatro Sociale, which has welcomed Anna Scalfi Eghenter’s latest installation inside since Monday, April 26. The seats in the stalls of the Trento theater have been temporarily removed, and in their place visitors will find the shelves of a supermarket, including the products on sale; in fact, it is even possible to go shopping.

Interim Measure, this is the title of the installation, intends to translate the sense of the precariousness to which places of culture, and in this case theaters, have been subjected for months. By presenting a supermarket in the stalls of a historic theater, the artist wants to recall the different treatment given to the consumption of essential goods. The opening of supermarkets, for food consumption, is not matched by the opening of places designated for the consumption of another essential good such as culture, not even in the form of the supermarket.

The supermarket, set up with the collaboration of Coop Trentino and Metalsistem, will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (last entry), with restricted access and a maximum concurrence of 29 people. Public entry is free, but subject to reservation with entrances cadenced every half hour, and will take place in full compliance with Covid-19 protocols (temperature detection and hand sanitization). Reservations can also be made by calling the toll-free number 800013952 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 6 p.m.; Monday through Sunday. For access on Saturday and Sunday, pre-booking at least one day in advance is required. Visitors can visit the installation until Sunday, May 2, for a maximum time of 30 minutes.

The project is curated by Fabio Bassan and produced by Centro Servizi Culturali Santa Chiara with the support of the Europa Foundation.
