The Pontormo exhibition, which opens at the Scuderie del Quirinale in Rome on October 7, will also feature the artist’s greatest masterpiece, the “Deposition” from the Church of Santa Felicita in Florence, which will therefore be temporarily removed from its home and its original setting to be displayed in the exhibition curated by Cristina Acidini together with Elena Capretti, Philippe Costamagna, Bruce Edelstein, and Carlo Falciani. The painting has been in the Florentine church since 1528, when Pontormo (Jacopo Carucci; Pontorme di Empoli, 1494 – Florence, 1557) delivered it to the patron, the banker Ludovico Capponi, who had commissioned it for the family chapel. It was in 1528 that the painting arrived at the Capponi Chapel, which will therefore be without its principal work for several months, until February 7, 2027.
The news was first reported in an article by Edoardo Sassi in today’s issue of *La Lettura* (a supplement to *Corriere della Sera*), which provides the first details on some of the works that will be on display: in addition to the Deposition, there will be the Visitation of Carmignano (which was already known),the Halberdier from the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, and the Supper at Emmaus from the Uffizi (which are among the exhibition’s sponsors and which, according to the Corriere article, will lend at least seven other paintings—including the famous birthing panel depicting the Birth of St. John the Baptist—and sixteen drawings, including the preparatory sketches for the frescoes in the Basilica of San Lorenzo that were destroyed in 1742). Alongside Pontormo’s works will be pieces by Bronzino, who was his student and colleague. In addition, there will be a remote comparison with Bill Viola, who drew inspiration from Pontormo for some of his works: specifically, the church of Santa Maria Antiqua in the Roman Forum will host *The Greeting*, a video installation inspired by the *Visitation of Carmignano*.
The news of the relocation of the *Deposition* is not yet official, but, according to Sassi, the church has already confirmed that the move will take place. It is unclear whether the tondos depicting the four evangelists — which Pontormo painted together with Bronzino and which have previously left the Florentine church to be displayed at the 2010 Bronzino exhibition held at Palazzo Strozzi—will also be coming from Santa Felicita. Nor is this the first time the “Deposition” has been loaned: Pontormo’s masterpiece left Santa Felicita on another recent occasion, for the exhibition on the 16th century in Florence, which was also held at Palazzo Strozzi in 2017: the exhibition, curated by Antonio Natali and Carlo Falciani, presented a memorable comparison between Pontormo’s “Deposition ,” that of Rosso Fiorentino housed at the Pinacoteca Civica in Volterra, and that of Bronzino, on loan from the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Besançon.
