Herculaneum, ArtBonus campaign kicks off for restoration of Villa Sora and Terme-Ginnasio

The Herculaneum Archaeological Park launches an ArtBonus campaign for the restoration of Villa Sora and the Terme-Ginnasio in Torre del Greco. The project, with a total value of 60 thousand euros, allows citizens and businesses to contribute a 65 percent tax credit.

The Herculaneum Archaeological Park has launched an ArtBonus campaign aimed at supporting restoration and maintenance works at two sites located in Torre del Greco (Naples), Villa Sora and the so-called Terme-Ginnasio. The initiative is part of the activities for the protection and enhancement of the archaeological heritage of the Vesuvian area and provides for a total amount of work of 60 thousand euros. The two complexes, located about 3.6 kilometers from ancient Herculaneum, have come under the purview of the Herculaneum Archaeological Park since 2023. The campaign is part of the ArtBonus initiative, which allows citizens, businesses and private entities to contribute economically to the recovery of cultural heritage by benefiting from a tax credit equal to 65 percent of the sums paid.

Villa Sora is a Roman-era mansion overlooking the Gulf of Naples. The building is built on terraces facing the sea and preserves important decorative elements, including frescoed walls, mosaic and opus sectile floors. The complex testifies to a fine residence set in a landscape context strongly characterized by its relationship with the coast. The so-called Terme-Ginnasio, on the other hand, have only been partially explored and return the remains of another residential complex. The area has recently been cleared of thick reed vegetation that had restricted its visibility for decades, allowing a new reading of the surviving structures.

The restoration and maintenance interventions

The interventions planned for the campaign concern, for Villa Sora, the restoration of the decorative parietal apparatus, with operations of consolidation of the pictorial film, cleaning and material and pictorial integration. The relocation in situ of a detached wall painting is also planned, after a phase of consolidation of the fragments and subsequent assembly on a suitable panel.

Extraordinary maintenance work on degraded or detached plaster is planned for the Baths-Gymnasium, as well as activities to monitor and counteract the phenomena of degradation caused by weathering, microflora and infesting vegetation. The condition of the site is aggravated by its proximity to the sea, which contributes to the acceleration of deterioration processes.

The Archaeological Park of Herculaneum has indicated that the ArtBonus campaign is open to contributions from citizens, businesses and private individuals, emphasizing the ongoing nature of the archaeological heritage protection and conservation activities. Each donation, regardless of the amount, is intended to support the planned interventions on the two complexes.
