Ferragamo restores sculptural groups in Piazza della Signoria with €1 million. The City of Florence announces the start of the project.

The City of Florence has announced the start of the project to restore the large sculptural groups in Piazza della Signoria and the copy of the David in Piazzale Michelangelo thanks to the disbursement granted by Salvatore Ferragamo spa under theArt Bonus, which amounts to 1,093,750, for the three-year period 2019-2021. The agreement provides for the restoration of the bronze equestrian statue of Cosimo I de’ Medici by Giambologna, theHercules and Cacus by Baccio Bandinelli, the copy of Michelangelo’s David, and the copy of Donatello ’s Judith and Holofernes located in Piazza della Signoria (the first in the center of the square, the second and third near the entrance to Palazzo Vecchio, and the fourth on the Arengario of Palazzo Vecchio), to which is added the restoration of the bronze copy of David located in Piazzale Michelangelo. Details of the interventions have not yet been released.

“We are really pleased that Maison Ferragamo cares about our artistic heritage and wants to continue, with insight and sensitivity, to be at our side for a new restoration operation that is also a proof of true love for the city,” said Mayor Dario Nardella and Culture Councillor Tommaso Sacchi. “After the splendid Ammannati fountain recently inaugurated after careful restoration, we will see a completely renovated Piazza Signoria and our most cherished statues shining as they once did.”

“For our company,” says Ferruccio Ferragamo, president of Salvatore Ferragamo, “fashion and art have always been strongly intertwined activities: from the very beginning of his business, my father Salvatore sensed the close relationship between these two worlds in terms of research and creativity, and throughout his career he found inspiration and ingenious cues in the different expressions of art. The relationship with art, with the city of Florence and with all its territory is therefore part of our DNA, and with this choice we wanted to continue the path that my mother and father had begun to trace. Italy is a country with a priceless artistic heritage and I strongly believe that its preservation is a priority and a duty of all of us.”
