Moon over the Colosseum returns. An unusual route to discover the rediscovered graffiti

Every Saturday from July 25 to August 29, 2020, you can participate in the new unusual route of The Moon over the Colosseum.

La Luna sul Colosseo returns to the Colosseum Archaeological Park with anew and special edition.

Every Saturday, from July 25 to August 29, 2020, you can participate in the narration of the new stories of the La Luna sul Colosseo trail, entitled Di maghi, necromanti, pastori e altri mestieri. An unusual itinerary that, for the first time, is enriched by the recent rediscovery of graffiti identified in the ambulatory of the first order and dated between the late Middle Ages and the 17th century. Names carved into the travertine, as well as dates, sacred and profane symbols tell fragments of stories of ordinary people who worked and frequented the Colosseum when the monument was isolated from the rest of the city and partly buried. Groups of a maximum of twenty people may participate in the tour, in one-hour shifts in Italian and English, accompanied by educational workers.

On the floor of the arena, with an extraordinary overlook of the skeleton of the dungeons where gladiators and animals waited their turn to perform in front of spectators in the stands, the storytelling rediscovers the best-known stories that still fuel fascination for the Colosseum today.

Ascending to the second order, evidence of the uninterrupted life of the monument over time, the ceremony of the via crucis that originally took place around the perimeter of the arena, and the charm of the amphitheater that has become an icon of modern Rome will be evoked through the exhibits of the museum space The Colosseum is told.

The magic of the monument in the evening hours, between lights and shadows, will be completed with an overlook of the Colosseum square, in front of the Arch of Constantine and the Temple of Venus and Rome.

Visits to the Roman Forum and Palatine are also enriched, with the resumption of routes that were closed during the experimental period of the first weeks of the PArCo’s reopening. A Full Experience ticket at a cost of €22 has been reinstated as of Saturday, July 18, which will allow access and visits to the arena floor between 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., as well as to the second order of the Colosseum with the permanent exhibition The Colosseum is told and inside the Roman Forum Palatine to four Super sites.

The ticket is valid for 48 hours from the first entry into the Park. Between 12 noon and 6 p.m. it will be possible to visit the Super sites: the second floor of the Palatine Museum, where architectural decorations and sculptures restore the splendor of the imperial palaces that once stood on the hill; from the atrium of the House of Augustus, the still vivid colors of the frescoes in the cubicle and the studiolo will be glimpsed; the extraordinary cycle of medieval paintings decorating Santa Maria Antiqua will be visible again; and the Domitian Ramp overlooking the Forum will be walkable again.
