Palermo's Puppet Museum wins Icom Italy Award 2017


The International Puppet Museum in Palermo wins the 2017 Icom Italy Award given to the best Italian museum.

It goes to the International Museum of Puppets “Antonio Pasqualino” in Palermo the ICOM Italy Prize 2017, awarded to the best Italian museum among those in the competition (seventy-five museums between public and private participated in this edition). The award was presented during a ceremony held in Milan at the Braidense Library.

The jury, composed of Alessandra Mottola Molfino, Françoise Dalex, Michela Di Macco, Manuel Guido, and Tina Lepri decided to award the Palermo institution, active since 1975, with the following motivation: The International Museum of Puppets, awarded by UNESCO in 2014, as an “Oral and Intangible Masterpiece of Humanity,” knows how to enhance its heritage of 3. 500 extraordinary pieces of the work of Sicilian puppets but also puppets and marionettes from all over the world. It attracts audiences with original collections, quality programs and frequent performances. This, as well as international collaborations, make it one of the most beloved and wonderful in Italy.

Special mentions for the nine other museums that made it to the shortlist of ten finalists: the Galata Museo del Mare in Genoa, the National Museum and Archaeological Park of Egnazia (Brindisi), the Museum of Natural History of the University of Pisa, the Museo della Marineria in Cesenatico, the Museo della Marineria in Cesenatico, the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Calatia (Maddaloni), the Museo Diocesano e del Codex in Rossano Calabro, the Museo Egizio in Turin, the Museo Poldi Pezzoli in Milan and the Museo dell’Istituto Centrale per la Grafica in Rome.
