Parma, admire the great 15th-century rose window of San Francesco del Prato at altitude

On weekends from Sept. 19 to Nov. 8, guided tours to admire the 15th-century rose window of the Church of St. Francis of the Meadow resume again this year.

After last year’s success, the opportunity to take part in guided tours at altitude in the Church of San Francesco del Prato in Parma is repeated in 2020: on weekends from September 19 to November 8, visitors will be able to take a closer look at the sixteen-beam rose window created in 1462 by Alberto da Verona, surrounded by the large polychrome terracotta frame.

It is aunique one-hourexperience that starts with the history of the church and then later climbs to the top to admire from above the large window set in the facade and the view of the city and the nearby cathedral.

The Church of San Francesco del Prato was first a place of worship and, from the Napoleonic era until 1992, a place of imprisonment and prison; well-known figures, such as Giovannino Guareschi, were also imprisoned here.

Reservations are required to participate in the guided tours by calling 371 1663004 (5 to 8 p.m.) or by e-mail at visite@sanfrancescodelprato.it

“In a sad period, the prison period,” commented Don Alfredo Bianchi, director of the Office for Ecclesiastical Cultural Heritage of the Diocese of Parma, “the San Francesco complex was almost estranged from the life of the city. Now Parma, and not only Parma, has returned to actively claim the right and the will to rediscover an artistic symbol and an irreplaceable place of the spirit.”

Fragments of the 15th-century frescoes that adorned the building were discovered in the church last December , under the plaster of the central apse: they will now be visible thanks to a fundraiser launched on Crédit Agricole Italia’s CrowdForLife platform, which has Fondazione Cariparma as a partner, which will donate an amount equal to the total amount raised (up to a maximum of 50 percent of the final target amount).

It is also possible to support the San Francesco del Prato restoration project through a free disbursement, benefiting from the Art Bonus.
