Sleep inside a Hopper painting: from October you can. Recreated the room of one of his famous paintings

Starting in October, you can sleep inside ... a Hopper painting: the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts has recreated the room of one of his famous works.

An initiative that is sure to please lovers of Edward Hopper (Nyack, 1882 - New York, 1967), one of the most highly regarded American artists of the early 20th century: the Virginia Museum of Fine Art (VMFA) in Richmond, United States, has in fact decided to recreate live the Western Motel room, Hopper’s 1957 work preserved at the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut. The project is titled The Hopper Hotel Experience and is part of the exhibition Edward Hopper and the American Hotel, which will run from October 26, 2019 to February 23, 2020. Throughout the exhibition period, visitors will also be able to sleep in Hopper’s specially reconstructed room.

In late August, ticket sales will begin for the Hopper Hotel Experience, as it has been renamed: packages will start from a price of $150 per night to nearly $500. Each package will contain a variety of benefits, from gift cards to special access to Richmond museum exhibits and more. The tickets will likely sell out, in part because the experience does not last for the entire exhibition period (but only for fifty nights), so interested parties can monitor the museum’s website right now to make sure they don’t miss out.

"Western Motel is one of Hopper’s best-known and most studied paintings," points out Leo G. Mazow, head of American art at VMFA. “And we thought it will be fun and enlightening for people to directly experience the spaces in which Hopper stayed so often and painted so frequently.” The exhibition will focus on representations of hotels in American painting, and there will also be works by supporting artists such as Cindy Sherman, Ed Ruscha and John Singer Sargent. There will also be a follow-on stage, to be held in Indianapolis from June to September, however, probably without the “Hotel Experience.”
