The Day of Historic Houses, the cultural initiative promoted by ADSI to enhance Italy’s architectural heritage, including villas, castles and parks, is approaching on May 25. In Veneto, however, the event takes on an even richer form thanks to a special project that not only opens the doors of numerous mansions but also allows access to the State Archives.
The schedule of openings includes: on May 25, the national initiative with 34 Historic Houses that can be visited throughout the region. The State Archives will be accessible in Vicenza on May 22, in Venice on May 23, in Padua and Verona on May 24, and the event will conclude on May 26 in Belluno. Visits, including those to the Archives, are by reservation through www.associazionedimorestoriche.it.
“Setting foot in an Archives means getting in touch with the ’abode of papers,’ documents that record data, but which, when placed in relation to each other and understood, tell stories, the stories of our territory, of the settlements, administrations and people who populated it,” says Monica del Rio, archivist at the State Archives of Venice. “Also this year, our intention is to propose paths through the documents we preserve, in order to deepen the knowledge of historical residences, as nodes of the local social, political and urban network.”
For Giulio Gidoni, president of Adsi Veneto, this is a project “that aims to enhance the history and culture of our heritage. These assets, by their nature ’not relocatable’ and closely linked to the territory and community, represent a perfect interconnection between culture, tourism, agribusiness and preservation of local identity. The project we have developed here in Veneto with the State Archives aims to strengthen these interconnections. For this I thank the availability of the facilities and scholars of the State Archives.”
