15th century masterpieces from the Marche region on display in Fermo

Fermo works from the 15th century are on display at the exhibition 'The 15th Century in Fermo. Tradition and Avant-Garde from Nicholas of Ulysses to Carlo Crivelli,' from April 21 to September 2, 2018.

Scheduled in Fermo, at the Church of San Filippo, is the exhibition The 15th Century in Fermo. Tradition and the Avant-Garde from Nicholas of Ulysses to Carlo Crivelli, from April 21 to September 2, 2018: this is a stage in the Mostrare le Marche project, a series of exhibitions focused on the region’s cultural heritage and taking place in all the cities of the Marche region ( the exhibition on Cola dell’Amatrice in Ascoli Piceno, running until July 15, is also part of the series).

The Fermo exhibition aims to recount the developments of 15th-century art in Fermo, setting as its starting date 1433, the year in which Francesco Sforza, having conquered the lands of the Marca, made Fermo the capital of a new state. The Sforza court, settled in the Girfalco fortress, promoted several artistic worksites in the city. Among them was the decoration of the rooms of the Girfalco, undertaken beginning in 1442: a group of artists, namely Nicola di Ulisse, Bartolomeo di Tommaso da Foligno, Andrea Delitio, Giambono di Corrado da Ragusa and Luca de Alemania were responsible for the decorations. After the capitulation of the Sforza family, however, the fortress was completely destroyed, and with it the frescoes, but the artists of Girfalco had nonetheless set the school by giving considerable impetus to local painters.

Alongside the works of the Girfalco painters are therefore exhibited the works of local artists such as Marino Angeli, Pierpalma da Fermo, and Paolo da Visso, who formed and developed the original characters of the Apennine style of the Girfalco painters. As for the latter, the exhibition will feature some masterpieces such as the Polyptych of St. Eutizio by Nicola di Ulisse from Siena, the Risen Christ also by Nicola di Ulisse (a work visible only in the exhibition because the museum that preserves it, namely the Castellina Museum, is impassable to this day) and the Madonna of Humility with St. Catherine by Andrea Delitio, along with other certain works by the artists engaged in the Girfalco. The itinerary also includes the display of works by artists documented in Fermo in the mid-15th century, and concludes with the works of Carlo and Vittore Crivelli, who in 1468, arriving from Venice and after a stay in Dalmatia, settled precisely in Fermo: space, therefore, for Carlo Crivelli’s Massa Fermana Polyptych and a notable body of works by him and his brother Vittore. In all, there are five sections of which the exhibition is composed: “Fermo 1442: Nicola di Ulisse da Siena al Girfalco”; “Renaissance and Antiquity: Tuscans, Venetians, Germans and Flemish from the Coasts to the Apennines”; “Late Gothic Painters in the Mid-Fifteenth Century: Marino Angeli, Pierpalma and Lorenzo da Fermo”; “Fermo 1468-1479: the city of Carlo and Vittore Crivelli”; “From churches and castles: miniatures, goldsmiths, textiles and ceramics.”

The exhibition observes the following opening hours: in April and May, Tuesday to Friday 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.; in June, Tuesday to Sunday 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.; in July, August and September, Monday to Sunday 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. to 2 p.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is with a single ticket for the Fermo museum and monument circuit (valid for one year): full 8 euros, reduced 6 euros (children 14 to 25, groups of at least 15 people, FAI, TCI, Italia Nostra members and Mostrare le Marche coupon downloadable from eventiturismo.marche.it), free for under 13, disabled, ICOM members, journalists with ODG card.
