At the Gallerie d'Italia in Turin, the first retrospective in Europe dedicated to Cristina Mittermeier

From March 14 to Sept. 1, 2024, the Gallerie d'Italia in Turin presents the first retrospective in Europe dedicated to photographer Cristina Mittermeier, in collaboration with National Geographic. It focuses on the themes of the underwater world, the terrestrial world and tribal peoples.

Intesa sanpaolo opens to the public from March 14 to September 1, 2024 at the Gallerie d’Italia in Turin, Italy the exhibition Cristina Mittermeier. The Great Wisdom, curated by Lauren Johnston in collaboration with National Geographic. The first retrospective in Europe dedicated to the photographer, some 90 photographs will be on display for the occasion to provide an overview of the important research work of Cristina Mittermeier, a photographer, marine biologist and activist who, over the years, has documented the beauty of our planet.

Organized around the three major themes of the underwater world, the terrestrial world and tribal peoples, the exhibition aims to develop the artist’s idea of “enoughness” as a way to understand what our place is within the global ecosystem, inviting reflection on how much and what is ’enough’ for us and to consider a more sustainable and conscious existence. Through his photographs, Mittermeier wants to bear witness to traditions, rituals and knowledge passed down from generation to generation and invite the public to reflect on the “great wisdom” that underlies the world. His photographs are meant to remind us that human beings are not isolated creatures, but members of an interconnected society. Using our planet’s limited resources wisely is critical to humanity’s future, particularly the health of the oceans has a direct impact on our climate, the air we breathe and the food we consume.

Cristina Mittermeier is co-founder and president of the SeaLegacy association, which was formed in 2014 by the union of internationally renowned photographers, filmmakers and writers who have been involved in raising awareness for ocean advocacy for nearly two decades.

The exhibition will be joined by a rich schedule of in-depth events with free admission for the traditional #INSIDE public program on Wednesday evenings. Kicking off the events will be a double meeting with Cristina Mittemeier scheduled for Thursday, March 14. The photographer will meet with the public at the museum’s Bookshop to sign the exhibition catalog produced by Edizioni Gallerie d’Italia | Skira, available in Italian and English editions. At 6:30 p.m. Mittermeier will be the protagonist of the #INSIDE: “A GREATER WISDOM” event to explore the themes of the exhibition, together with journalist Giulia Zonca. The exhibition also features a series of audio content that can be downloaded through the Gallerie d’Italia app, with dedicated insights.

“Cristina Mittermeier captures in her shots moments of the planet of extraordinary beauty that excite, arouse wonder and invite us to reflect on our relationship with nature. In this new project, too, the Gallerie d’Italia in Turin recounts the present with the positive force of photography, capable of engaging and speaking to many audiences, confirming the important social role of a museum that is current, alive and open,” said Michele Coppola, Executive Director Art Culture and Historical Assets Intesa Sanpaolo.
