At the Louvre a momentous exhibition on Eugène Delacroix

From March 29 to July 23, 2018, the Louvre is hosting a momentous exhibition on Eugène Delacroix, the first since 1963.

The Louvre is planning a major exhibition on Eugène Delacroix (Charenton-Saint-Maurice, 1798 - Paris, 1863), the leading exponent of Romanticism in France: the exhibition, titled simply Delacroix (1798-1863), runs from March 29 to July 23, 2018, is organized in collaboration with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and promises, by the admission of the Paris museum itself, to be an epoch-making exhibition, given also the large number of works housed: 180, most of them paintings. This is a major exhibition (the first on Delacroix since 1963, when a major exhibition was staged for the centenary of his death) that aims to trace Delacroix’s entire activity, from the Salon exhibitions of the 1920s to the extreme stages of his career (as well as the lesser-known ones), with the mysterious religious paintings and landscapes. The aim is to trace a comprehensive survey of the art of Delacroix, a painter who looked to the Venetian and Flemish artists of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries to create masterpieces that have marked the history of art, who demonstrated incredible virtuoso skills, and who was also a curious, critical and learned illustrator, driven by a strong passion.

Curated by Sébastien Allard and Côme Fabre, the exhibition aims to present visitors with Delacroix’s production in all its aspects: paintings, watercolors, illustrations, lithographs, magazines, also to demonstrate the great influence Delacroix had on art (artists such as Monet, Cézanne, Picasso and others owe much to his work). “Delacroix,” curator Allard told Agence France Press, "is the greatest Romantic painter in the world. His painting [ Liberty Leading the People, ed.] is one of the most iconic works that are kept in the Louvre. But it still remains a mysterious work. And there is much to discover beyond his most famous painting: in this exhibition, we are showing almost all of his production for the first time since 1963." The exhibition is also accompanied by a series of lectures all dedicated to Delacroix.

The exhibition can be visited during the Louvre’s opening hours: daily (except Tuesdays, the museum’s closing day) from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. On Wednesdays and Fridays, the exhibition opens until 9:45 p.m. Admission to the exhibition is with the museum ticket: full price 15 euros, free for under 18, young people with EU citizenship aged 18 to 25, art teachers, Pass Education card holders, artists registered with the Maison des Artistes or the Association Internationale des Arts Plastiques, ICOM members, visitors seeking employment or on benefits, disabled with accompanying person. Free for under-26s of all nationalities from 6 p.m. Friday, and free for all on July 14, French National Day. Information and program for the lecture series on the dedicated page on the Louvre website.
