Gustav Klimt is world famous for his gold-leaf decorated paintings and portraits depicting seductive women with strong personalities. The exhibition aims to introduce this “golden boy” and the story of his talent. To develop his unique style he took inspiration from modernWestern European art of his time. Indeed, research has revealed which artists influenced Klimt’s art, but also which works of art were on display at exhibitions of the time, including those of the Vienna Secession, of which Klimt was one of the founders and leading exponents. Klimt was inspired by the work of artists such as Van Gogh, Rodin, Toulouse-Lautrec, Monet and Matisse. And in this exhibition it is intended to place his art and that of his favorite artists in dialogue.

Iconic masterpieces will be on display, such as Water Snakes II, the portrait of Emilie Flöge, the muse behind many of his works, and Judith from the Belvedere in Vienna.

The exhibition is a collaboration with the Belvedere in Vienna, which houses the world’s largest collection of Gustav Klimt’s oil paintings. After the Van Gogh Museum, the exhibition will in fact move to the Belvedere Museum from Feb. 3 to May 29, 2023.
