Yesterday, March 19, the major exhibition Escher opened in Catania at the Palazzo della Cultura, dedicated entirely to the great Dutch artist Maurits Cornelis Escher (Leeuwarden, 1898 - Laren, 1972). The exhibition, which has already made stops in Rome, Bologna, Treviso and Milan, gathering a total of almost a million visitors, therefore comes to Sicily with, alongside the works already on display in the four previous exhibitions, an unpublished selection of works intended to recall the stay that Escher made in 1935 precisely in Catania, during his Italian “Grand Tour.”
Thus, at the Palazzo della Cultura there will be several works produced during his Sicilian sojourns (Escher, in fact, did not stay only in Catania): from the Temple of Segesta of 1932 to the “postcards” of the Catania coasts of 1936, passing through the depictions of the cloister of Monreale, the Cathedral of Cefalù and the lava flows of Etna.
The exhibition, produced and organized by Arthemisia in collaboration with the Escher Foundation, is curated by Marco Bussagli and Federico Giudiceandrea and will remain open until September 17, 2017. Hours: Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to midnight and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. (ticket office closes one hour earlier). Special openings, 10 a.m.-8 p.m., are planned for Easter, Easter Monday, April 25, May 1, June 2, and August Ferragosto. The entrance fee is 12 euros (reduced 10 euros for over 65s, children 11 to 18, journalists, students under 25, employees, agents and clients of Generali Italia; reduced 9 euros for groups of at least 15 people; reduced 8 euros for university students valid on Mondays only; reduced to 4 euros for schools of all levels and for children from 4 to 11 years old; free for children up to 4 years old, accredited journalists for service, disabled people with accompanying person, authorized tour guides, ICOM members, interpreters, two teachers for each school group, one accompanying person per group, invitation coupon holders and Arthemisia Vip Card.
