David LaChapelle in Venice

From now April 12 to September 10, 2017, the Casa dei Tre Oci in Venice is hosting a major monographic exhibition dedicated to American photographer David LaChapelle.

Kicking off today, April 12, is the major monographic exhibition dedicated to one of the most celebrated contemporary photographers, David LaChapelle, which will end on September 10, 2017.

The exhibition is held in Venice at the Casa dei Tre Oci and features more than one hundred images chronicling the American photographer’s artistic career, from the black-and-white shots he took in the 1990s to the color shots of today.

Lost + Found, curated by Reiner Opoku and Denis Curti, highlights the transition from his early shots in the 1990s inspired by the world of magazines and advertising, in which he intends to denounce contemporary obsessions, the relationship with the superfluous and with appearance, and celebrity, to his works inspired by the Italian Renaissance, such as The Deluge, which took shape after admiring Michelangelo’s Universal Flood. Also featured are After the Deluge and Awakened, in which the theme of water as an all-submerging and regenerating entity is central.
This is followed by series of photographs on Vanitas between the sacred and the sacrilegious and landscape photographs.

In addition, visitors can view the world premiere of "New World," a series of 11 photographs completed over the past four years that deals with themes such as paradise, nature, and the soul by revolving around the human figure in order to reflect on metaphysical issues.
LaChapelle said he was inspired for this new series by the works of Odilon Redon, William Blake, Michelangelo and the music of Michael Jackson and Pharrell Williams.

The exhibition is organized by the Venice Foundation and Civita Tre Venezie, and the catalog is published by Marsilio editori.
