HangarBicocca dedicates an exhibition to Bruce Nauman and his spatial research

From September 15, 2022 to February 26, 2023, Pirelli HangarBicocca presents the exhibition Bruce Nauman. Neons Corridors Rooms, focusing on the artist's spatial and architectural research.

Pirelli HangarBicocca will host from September 15, 2022 to February 26, 2023 the exhibition Bruce Nauman. Neons Corridors Rooms, curated by Roberta Tenconi and Vicente Todolí with Andrea Lissoni, Nicholas Serota, Leontine Coelewij, Martijn van Nieuwenhuyzen, and Katy Wan, and organized by Pirelli HangarBicocca, Tate Modern, London, and Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.

The exhibition will focus on the spatial and architectural research of Bruce Nauman (Fort Wayne, Indiana, 1941; lives and works in New Mexico), among the most prominent living artists. In addition to several works already exhibited in London and Amsterdam, the show will also feature a considerable selection of his celebrated corridors and rooms. Highlighting relationships, developments and formal variations, the exhibition will thus explore for the first time in their entirety the experiments made by the artist in terms of spatial experience, architectural approach, use of light, sound, language and video.

Bruce Nauman has marked the history of contemporary art from the mid-1960s to the present, with pioneering research that embraces diverse media, such as installation, video, sculpture, performance, photography, drawing and sound. His artistic production denotes a singular interest in understanding the human experience, its conventions and the deeper aspects of the psyche, investigated through the perception of the body, the relationship with space, time and language. A frequent use of puns that explore alternative methods of communication also emerges in his practice.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog that will present the latest studies on Nauman’s spatial and architectural research in its entirety, delving into and highlighting conceptual developments, formal variations and relentless experimentation.
