In Genoa, photographer Maurizio Galimberti reflects on the image of women with aMuse exhibition

Maurizio Galimberti ’s solo exhibition aMuse: Francesca Pepe by Maurizio Galimberti curated by Flavia Motolese opens in the rooms of Palazzo Stella in Genoa. Having become famous for his Mosaics (composition of a series of Polaroids that like so many pieces, glued in a precise sequence, return the photographed subject) the artist has transformed visual fragmentation into an allusion to the facets of reality. The orchestration of the individual parts is intended to reflect the harmony and rhythm that the artist pursues, endowing the image with a depth of vision that is given not only by the optical experience, but above all by the meanings that this multiplicity of vision triggers. Starting from this reflection on the complexity of interpretation of what we see, the model Francesca Pepe wanted to investigate what lies behind the image of women today, offering herself to the photographic lens not as a mere subject, but, in an exchange of roles, as their co-author, letting fragilities and disturbances of the female soul seep out.

Galimberti’s choice to portray her often near the statue of an angel hints at the stereotype of a static and empty beauty, and at the tendency in society to traditionally impose on women the aspiration to angelic models. Even the title of the aMuse exhibition, in addition to indicating how the model is the photographer’s inspirational muse, alludes to the attitude of blinkered complacency to which women are educated. The doubling figure becomes, metaphorically, a symbol of the discrepancy that exists between being and appearing or that we construct between a socially acceptable and irreproachable exterior and the insecurities of our intimacy.

The exhibition will be open until Feb. 23, 2019 with hours Tuesday through Friday 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.
