Japanese contemporary art of the 2000s goes on stage at Milan's PAC

The PAC in Milan presents through Feb. 12, 2023, the exhibition "Japan. Body Perform Live," which explores contemporary Japanese art of the 2000s, focusing on trends involving artists' bodies and performance.

Japan. Body Perform Live is the exhibition that PAC - Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea in Milan is hosting until February 12, 2023 to explore the different expressions ofcontemporary Japanese art in the 2000s, focusing especially on trends involving artists’ bodies, the elements of performance, and the dynamics and movements related to it.

Curated by Shihoko Iida and Diego Sileo, the exhibition project aims to try to contextualize current art forms in the genealogy of the Japanese postwar avant-garde, or in the recent past, by generating multilayered dialogues among the works on display. Critically analyzing the relationships between bodily expressions and society, the environment and materiality, as well as technology, the artists involved recount their visions of life and death, the sense of urgency about identity politics, and how social politics has been revealed through artistic practices.

The artists are Makoto Aida, Dumb Type, Finger Pointing Worker/Kota Takeuchi, Mari Katayama, Meiro Koizumi, Yuko Mohri, Saburo Muraoka, Yoko Ono, Lieko Shiga, Chiharu Shiota, Kishio Suga, Yui Usui, Ami Yamasaki, Chikako Yamashiro, Fuyuki Yamakawa, Atsuko Tanaka, Kazuo Shiraga.
