Milan, GAM and Furla present the first solo exhibition in an Italian museum by feminist Andrea Bowers

Fondazione Furla and GAM - Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Milano present "Moving in Space without Asking Permission," the first solo exhibition of artist and activist Andrea Bowers in an Italian institution.

From September 15 to December 18, 2022 Fondazione Furla and GAM - Galleria d’Arte Moderna di Milano present Moving in Space without Asking Permission, an exhibition by Andrea Bowers (Wilmington, Ohio, 1965), curated by Bruna Roccasalva.

This is Andrea Bowers’ first solo exhibition in an Italian institution; the exhibition aims to offer animmersive experience in the artist’s work and her commitment to the struggle for gender equality andwomen’s empowerment.

Bowers is anAmerican artist and activist whose research combines aesthetic practice and political engagement from a feminist perspective. For nearly three decades she has been investigating issues such as gender equality, women’s and workers’ rights, immigration and environmentalism through a strong formal approach and linguistic experimentation that encompasses awide variety of media, from drawing to video, installation to neon.

The exhibition is part of a broader reflection on feminism that Bowers has been pursuing for some time, focusing in particular on the relationship between feminism and bodily autonomy, with a look at both the present and the history of Italy. Each of Bowers’ projects begins with in-depth research into the context in which she works and an encounter with its social fabric. In this case, the exhibition to be set up at GAM in Milan takes its starting point from the artist’s confrontation with some of today’s Italian feminist experiences, in particular with the work of philosopher and activist Alessandra Chiricosta, who studies and teaches the exercise of martial arts as a tool for bodily self-awareness and a break with gender stereotypes. The project was also created in response to the specificities of GAM’s exhibition context: a museum whose collection harks back to the historical period between the 19th and 20th centuries, when the women’s emancipation movement in Italy was taking its first steps.

The exhibition combines iconic works and ambitious new productions that testify to Andrea Bowers’ great linguistic versatility, and aims to make us reflect on the importance of research in which political activism and artistic practice are interconnected.

Furla Series - Andrea Bowers. Moving in Space without Asking Permission, is the fourth edition of the Furla Series project, and is the result of the collaboration between Fondazione Furla and GAM, a patnership that began in 2021 with Nairy Baghramian’s exhibition.

Furla Series is the project that since 2017 sees Fondazione Furla engaged in the creation of exhibitions in collaboration with important Italian art institutions, with an all-female program designed to give value and visibility to the fundamental contribution of women in contemporary culture.
