Milan, Roy Lichtenstein is on display at MUDEC with Multiple Visions

From May 1 to September 8, 2018, MUDEC in Milan is hosting the exhibition 'Roy Lichtenstein. Multiple Visions'.

A new exhibition dedicated to Roy Lichtenstein (New York, 1923 - 1997) will be held at MUDEC from May 1 to September 8, 2019: it is titled Roy Lichtenstein. Multiple Visions, is curated by Gianni Mercurio and is promoted by the City of Milan-Cultura and 24 ORE Cultura, which is also the producer, for the conception of MADEINART.

Lichtenstein’s art, recognizable at first glance and seemingly easy to understand, has fascinated generations of creatives since the early years of pop art, from painting to advertising, photography to design and fashion, and the seductive power it exerts on contemporary visual culture is still very strong. On display are about 100 works including prints including large format prints, sculptures, tapestries, a wide selection of editions from prestigious European and American museums, institutions and private collections as well as videos and photographs.

The exhibition is organized in a thematic itinerary, highlights through an overview of the themes and genres of Roy Lichtenstein’s art, how elements of different cultures converge in his work of deconstruction and reconstruction of the image, and then elaborated in a pop key with his very personal language: from the history of the birth of the United States to the epic of the Wild West, from the vernaculars and ethnographic artistic expressions of the American Indians to the pop culture that exploded following the post-World War II expansion of the world economy, from the European artistic culture of the avant-gardes to the contemplative spirit of oriental landscapes.

The fascination with “printed form,” i.e., mechanical reproduction as a source of inspiration, which underlies Roy Lichtenstein’s work and is implemented in his painting in a path from a copy that is transformed into an original, is presented in this exhibition in its reverse process: from an original idea to a multiplied copy.

The exhibition itinerary traverses the evolution in Lichtenstein’s work highlighting the evolution in Lichtenstein’s work with respect to the mechanical reproducibility of the work of art, of which he was perhaps the most sophisticated interpreter, but illustrating at the same time his different interpretations and formal representations with respect to the subjects treated: visions that proceed with constant trans-historical references to the changes in artistic languages.
