The major Artemisia Gentileschi exhibition in London will be held in the fall. Here are the dates

The long-awaited Artemisia Gentileschi exhibition in London, the first major monographic exhibition in the UK, is finally ready to go. Here are the dates.

The long-awaited exhibition on Artemisia Gentileschi (Rome, 1593 - Naples, 1653) at the National Gallery in London, which had been postponed due to the Covid emergency, will run from October 3, 2020 to January 24, 2021. So this fall, in the Sainsbury Wing of the London museum, Artemisia, the first major monographic exhibition on the painter in the United Kingdom, will be staged.

The exhibition will focus on the exceptional nature of Artemisia’s experience: a painter who, in 17th-century Europe, managed to excel in a male-dominated environment, defying convention and the expectations of patrons and becoming a highly successful artist. Although Artemisia was not the first female painter in the history of modern art, she painted subjects traditionally reserved for male painters and managed to establish herself as a name among the greatest of her time.

The National Gallery exhibition will follow Artemisia through all the stages of her career: from her beginnings in Rome to her move to Florence, from her Venetian interlude to her stay in London alongside her father Orazio Gentileschi, and finally to Naples, where the painter died in 1653. The exhibition announces that it will also have a documentary part set up from her letters, and promises to let the public see the world through her eyes and words.

Works from all over the world will arrive on loan for Artemisia: Italy will also contribute some works. To find out more you can visit the National Gallery website where you can find some previews.
