Turin's Royal Museums conclude Leonardo da Vinci celebrations with an exhibition of drawings


The celebrations of the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci ’s death continue at the Royal Museums of Turin with a new in-depth thematic itinerary in the Royal Library: the exhibition Il tempo di Leonardo 1452-1519, from December 10, 2019 to March 8, 2020.Through the precious materials housed in the Library, the exhibition traces more than sixty years of Italian and European history, a period of great cultural ferment in which events, destinies and stories of great protagonists of the Renaissance, from Michelangelo to Christopher Columbus, from Savonarola to Cesare Borgia, from the fall of theEastern Roman Empire to the advent of Protestantism and the invention of printing, events that forever changed the course of history.

The tour unfolds in the two rooms in the basement of the Royal Library: the first vault, the Leonardo Room, houses a selection of works by Italian artists contemporary with Leonardo da Vinci, alongside the Codex on the Flight of Birds. Nine autograph drawings by the Da Vinci master accompany the famous Portrait of a Man known as Self-Portrait: this is an opportunity to admire one of the best-known masterpieces in art history after the recent exhibition Leonardo da Vinci. Drawing the Future, designed by the Royal Museums from April 15 to July 21.

The second room presents illuminated manuscripts, incunabula, cinquecentine, precious ancient maps, drawings and engravings, flanked by a rich set of captions to illustrate the characters and major historical events that occurred during Leonardo’s life.

The exhibition is open from December 10, 2019 to March 8, 2020.
