Catajo Castle opens ten new unseen rooms

Catajo Castle opens ten new rooms to the public for the first time, bringing them back to life after two hundred years. A 16th-century fresco by Giovanni Battista Zelotti was also discovered in one of them.

The majestic Catajo Castle, a historic jewel in the heart of the Veneto region, in Battaglia Terme, in the heart of the Euganean Hills, has been opening its doors to a new experience for visitors since last weekend: in fact, the spaces open to visits have been doubled, with the inauguration of new rooms that had been closed for two centuries.

Thanks to an ambitious restoration and enhancement project, the castle now offers the public the chance to explore the rooms that once housed the Habsburg Este archdukes. These rooms, never before shown to the public, open to visitors with the promise of revealing secrets and anecdotes related to one of Europe’s most important dynasties. The centerpiece of this new experience are the ten new rooms, frescoed in the early 19th century by Marino Urbani (Venice, 1764 - Padua, 1853) in the neoclassical style. Bedrooms, a dining room, a game room: each room has been taken care of down to the smallest detail, offering an intimate and enveloping atmosphere that transports the visitor to a distant and fascinating era. But the real surprise is hidden behind the plasters of one of the rooms, where a relevant work of 16th-century painting was recently discovered, a wall painting by Giovanni Battista Zelotti (Verona, c. 1526 - Mantua, 1578). An artistic treasure that, after years of oblivion, finally returns to the light to delight the eyes of art lovers.

Starting last Saturday, April 13, 2024, Catajo Castle will therefore welcome visitors on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, offering the chance to explore an entire floor of the castle until now reserved for the archducal family. Two types of guided tours will be available, both with limited seating to ensure an exclusive and immersive experience. The first is called “The Never Seen Catajo”: a complete tour that includes a visit to the main floor and private rooms, with a duration of 1 hour and 45 minutes. Visitors will also have the opportunity to freely explore the surrounding park. The second is “The Private Rooms”: a guided tour dedicated exclusively to the private rooms, lasting 1 hour. After the tour, participants can enjoy a moment of relaxation by independently exploring the park and the frescoed main floor.
