Greece, museums and archaeological sites free for all under the full moon

On the occasion of the August Full Moon, Greece is offering free admission for all to the country's museums and archaeological sites.

Greece ’s Ministry of Culture and Sports is again organizing special initiatives on the occasion of the August Full Moon to allow visitors and tourists free access to museums and archaeological sites while enjoying the moonlight.

On Sunday, August 22, 120 archaeological sites and museums across the country will welcome the public to enjoy the full moon: fifty-two of these sites will host a series of events.

Other events will then take place on other dates and in other places: on Saturday, August 21, at the Castle of Agios Georgios, in Kefalonia; at Ano Kastro Mytilene, in Lesvos; at the Ancient Theater of Mieza, in Imathia; at the archaeological site of Elea, in Thesprotia; on Monday, August 23, at the archaeological site of Palatianos, in Kilkis; and on Wednesday, August 25, at the archaeological site of Loutro Polykastro, in Kilkis.

This year there will be mainly music concerts, theater performances, dance performances, poetry recitations, documentary screenings, art exhibitions, stargazing and guided tours. All this will be under the coordination of the General Directorate of Antiquities and Cultural Heritage, in cooperation with local authorities and cultural and landscape associations.

After the 2020 season limited by the pandemic, the hope is that “the light of the moon will be stronger than the shadow of the pandemic.” Citizens and tourists will have free access to the archaeological sites of Olympia, Corinthians, Delphi, Thebes, the Palace of the Grand Masters on the island of Rhodes, the fortress of Corfu and many other famous sites. The Acropolis Museum in Athens will also be open for free during Saturday and Sunday.
