Mantua, tactile visits to Ducal Palace will allow people to touch the works

Mantua, a series of tactile visits to the Ducal Palace starts that will allow the public, under staff supervision, to touch some works of art. The goal is for people to experience an aesthetic experience that goes beyond the eyes.

A series of tactile visits to the Ducal Palace in Mantua to discover the works in the collection from alternative points of view, and especially through a sense, that of touch, which is not commonly associated with visiting a museum, where the experience is based on the eyes. On the other hand, for conservation reasons, often when confronted with the works of art on display in a museum, it is not possible to do more than pause and look at the works from a certain distance, trying to grasp all the minute details, finding associations of meaning and possibly in the environment in which they are placed, with the help of the room texts. The aesthetic experience, however, is not the exclusive territory of the eyes and can be experienced by involving other senses as well.

Tactile tours-which have happily entered the palimpsest of museums around the world for some time now-represent a fundamental moment of knowledge aimed at anyone, not just people with visual impairments. They are opportunities to learn exploration techniques that, apart from our eyes, lead to the understanding of images using our hands. Or a time to explore in an innovative way the characteristics of the materials with which our historic buildings are built and decorated. It is ultimately an unusual and surprising way to experience a museum visit.

As part of its calendar of initiatives, therefore, Palazzo Ducale di Mantova offers a series of tactile visits centered on two guided tours. The first is entitled The Myth of Hercules and is inspired by the vicissitudes of the mythological hero starting with some pieces from the collections of the Gonzaga palace. Curated by the Ducal Palace Educational Services and guided by Lara Zanetti, The Myth of Hercules will allow visitors to relive some episodes told in sculptural works - but not only - that will be enjoyed through touch. The second path, on the other hand, focuses on the collection of the National Archaeological Museum of Mantua and the experience of tactile contact with some artifacts that were once the heritage of common use. This second course is entitled Archaeology in Your Hands and is led by Archaeology Officer Mari Hirose.
