Marche, for Urbisaglia Archaeological Park new course and new director, Sofia Cingolani

In the Marche region, the Archaeological Park of Urbs Salvia (Urbisaglia), the largest in the region, becomes an institute of the Regional Museums Directorate of the Ministry of Culture. Also appointed the first director: she is archaeologist Sofia Cingolani.

In Urbisaglia, Marche, the Urbs Salvia Archaeological Park, the largest in the region, has recently passed into the jurisdiction of the Marche Regional Museums Directorate, an institute of the Ministry of Culture that coordinates the region’s museums and parks, and joins the National Archaeological Museum of Marche in Ancona and the state archaeological museums of Ascoli Piceno, Numana, Cingoli, Arcevia, the Rocca di Senigallia and the Rocca di Gradara.

Also appointed is the first director of the new institute, which includes the archaeological park and the related State Archaeological Museum in Urbisaglia: she is Sofia Cingolani, an archaeologist born in 1979, with a Ph.D. in Roman archaeology in the Maghreb and on issues related to the study and enhancement of ancient architecture from the University of Macerata. Cingoani is an expert in ceramics, statuary and integrated management models for Museums, Areas and Archaeological Parks, and is an archaeological officer in the Marche Regional Museums Directorate as well as director of the State Archaeological Museums of Ascoli Piceno and Cingoli.

The archaeological park, covering a large area of more than 40 hectares within the Roman age wall circuit, preserves the monumental buildings of the city of Urbs Salvia, including two performance buildings (the theater and amphitheater), buildings of the civil forum and the temple-cryptoporticus dedicated to Salus Augusta. The archaeological research conducted by the University of Macerata since 1995 has not ceased to bring to light new things, sketching an increasingly articulate and interesting picture of the ancient city since its stages of formation, under the name Pollentia, in the second century B.C. The park, together with the Museum that contains part of its testimonies and whose reopening is being worked on, represents a destination of exceptional interest not only for the archaeological evidence it preserves but for the splendid naturalistic context with which these are integrated.

“The enhancement of the archaeological park, the largest and best-preserved archaeological context in the region, and the only state archaeological park, represents for our Regional Directorate a stimulating challenge and a great opportunity for growth,” comments Luigi Gallo, at the head of the Marche Regional Museums Directorate.

“It is,” adds director Sofia Cingolani, “a reality in the making in many respects. The challenge will be to measure oneself in valorization in the broadest possible sense, carefully weighing everything that concerns the management and coordination of a living and constantly evolving reality such as that of an archaeological park. It will be fundamental to deal with the numerous institutional actors involved in order to define common strategies and objectives, first and foremost the Municipality of Urbisaglia to which we owe tireless activity that has led to extraordinary results over the years, but also with the Region and the University to which we owe the archaeological investigations directed by Roberto Perna, professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Macerata, at the site. Then, of course, the dialogue will have to take place with the territory and its inhabitants. This is why the Marche Regional Museums Directorate is part of the Transfer Project, funded by the European Union, whose goal is precisely the identification of innovative common models for the planning and management of archaeological parks.”
