Massa Marittima: Museums Introduce Augmented Reality Plaques for Children

The Skylab Studios project is making its debut at the San Pietro all’Orto Museum in Massa Marittima (Grosseto): using QR codes and augmented reality, the mascot Roberta guides young children on an interactive and inclusive journey to discover the history of Massa Marittima.

The cultural heritage of Massa Marittima (Grosseto) is embracing a new way to explore the area, designed to engage young children. At the Museo di San Pietro all’Orto, new interactive augmented reality plaques developed by Skylab Studios have been unveiled. This project aims to make the visit more accessible, engaging, and inclusive for children and families through the use of digital technologies.

The initiative introduces a system that transforms the traditional museum tour into an interactive experience: visitors can use their smartphone or tablet to scan the QR codes on the panels installed throughout the museum’s galleries, and once scanned, Roberta— a cartoon-style mascot who guides children as they explore the collections, artifacts, and history of Massa Marittima.

The character was entirely conceived, illustrated, and developed in the Skylab Studios workshops with the goal of moving beyond traditional museum visit models, which are often based on passive engagement with content. Using simple language tailored to the cognitive needs of young children, Roberta brings the area’s historical and archaeological heritage to life, transforming the visit—according to Skylab Studios—into an “edutainment” experience, an approach that combines education and entertainment. The system was designed to be easy to use and to give families maximum autonomy throughout the tour. In fact, no dedicated devices are needed: simply use the camera on your smartphone or tablet to activate the augmented reality experience. The animated mascot appears directly in the surrounding environment, interacting with the museum spaces and guiding young visitors as they discover local history.

The goal of the initiative is to make the Maremma’s cultural heritage increasingly accessible through innovative tools capable of resonating with new generations. “The unveiling of the new interactive plaques has highlighted Skylab Studios’ strategic vision,” the company states, “which has always been focused on making culture a living and fully accessible heritage. Through the perfect fusion of scientific rigor and cutting-edge forms of expression, art and archaeology are transformed into an extraordinary adventure capable of captivating new generations, offering families a unique tool to stimulate children’s natural curiosity and, starting today, nurture the informed visitors of tomorrow.”

The initiative has been strongly supported by the municipal administration with the goal—as expressed by Mayor Irene Marconi—of making the history of the region increasingly accessible to everyone, starting with children, by combining the rigor of historical documentation with communication that engages younger audiences. The project was presented by the Zoe Social Cooperative, the managing entity of the Massa Marittima Museums, and received significant national recognition: the proposal ranked sixth out of approximately 600 applications submitted as part of the ministerial call for proposals dedicated to small museums.
