Sandro Chia and the warriors of Xi'an at the Bari Metropolitan Art Gallery

Sandro Chia revisits the terracotta army of Xi'an: the exhibition at the Bari Metropolitan Art Gallery runs from October 21, 2017 to March 31, 2018.

An exhibition dedicated to one of the best-known contemporary Italian artists, Sandro Chia (Florence, 1946), one of the exponents of the Transavanguardia movement, is starting at the Pinacoteca Metropolitana “Corrado Giaquinto” in Bari. The exhibition, running from Oct. 21, 2017 to March 31, 2018, is titled Sandro Chia and the Warriors of Xi’an: in fact, the Tuscan artist will offer ten life-size terracotta copies of ten sculptures taken from Emperor Qin Shi Huang’s army of warriors, found near Xi’an in China in 1974. Chia intends to carry out an operation of “artistic reappropriation” by giving new life and new meanings to the ten sculptures, whose color scheme will be totally revisited.

In addition, Chia’s sculptures will be arranged throughout the museum itinerary of the Bari Metropolitan Art Gallery, next to icons, medieval frescoes, sixteenth-century polyptychs and other ancient sculptures. Next to the ten main sculptures will be seven heads, also of warriors from the Xi’an army.

The exhibition can be visited during the museum’s opening hours, Tuesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Last admission half an hour before closing, Mondays and midweek holidays closed. Full museum and exhibition tickets cost 3 euros, reduced (ICOM members, FAI, TCI, Emergency, COOP, Qui!Cultura holders, teachers and tour guides) cost only 50 cents. Free for children under 18, over 65, disabled and accompanying persons, students at universities and academies of fine arts or conservatories, teachers accompanying school groups, tour guides accompanying groups, and journalists with badges. Free admission for all on the first Sunday of each month and during special events.
